Band leadership changes for 2017/ Jake Watson appointed Playing Instructor

Our St. Patrick's Day concert on March 19 was a great success, a big thank you to all who attended. We wish to thank all the performers that evening, especially the Calder Highland Dancers, O'Shea-Chaplin Academy step dancers, vocalist Siobhan Lundt and keyboardist Ian MacConnell.

Leadership changes for 2017: we are pleased to announce that Colum Lundt has returned to his position as Drum Sergeant of the TAPB drum corps. Don Ritchie has been appointed Pipe Sergeant for the 2017 season and Ian MacConnell, formerly a long-serving piper with TAPB, will return as our Bass drummer.

Jake Watson has been re-appointed the Band's Playing Instructor for the 2017 competition season. Our full competition season schedule will be posted by May 1st.

Band moves to new Rehearsal Hall

March 13, 2017

Tickets for our March 19th St. Patrick's Day concert at Freeport Hall in Boston, MA are now on sale. For further information on the concert or to purchase tickets in advance click here. Tickets are also available at the door; this event is the start of the 2017 public performance season for TAPB and we hope to see many of you there.

New Rehearsal Hall: TAPB has officially moved from the Lexington Knights of Columbus hall to Elks Lodge #2204 in Lexington (just a few miles from the old hall). Directions to the new hall are available online. Come out and hear the Band on Thursday evenings, starting @ 7:30 p.m.

 

TAPB announces concert schedule

Band to appear in two concerts in March

Tulach Árd Pipe Band is pleased to announce two concerts this spring: we will appear on Sunday, March 13 at St. Anselm's College (Manchester, NH) and in a joint concert with the 103rd Electricians Pipes & Drums on Saturday, March 19 at the IBEW Hall, Boston, MA. Details regarding both concerts will be posted shortly. Tickets for the March 19 concert go on sale February 11; stay tuned!

The Band resumes our regular rehearsal schedule on Thursday, January 6 in Lexington, MA and a special day-long workshop on Saturday, January 8. Stay tuned for our closed season Concert schedule, with two concerts coming up this spring (details available shortly). Unfortunately we will not be presenting our Robert Burns Dinner Concert in 2017; please plan to attend one of our spring concerts instead!

TAPB begins closed season

Open House for TAPB School of Piping & Drumming announced

Tulach Árd Pipe Band has begun it's "closed" season and wishes to invite all pipers and drummers to drop by one of our Thursday evening rehearsals in Lexington, MA. We have also announced an Open House for our School of Piping & Drumming for prospective new students, to be held on Thursday, October 28th at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Lexington. Come meet our instructors between 6:45 - 8:00 p.m. and feel free to stay awhile to listen to the band rehearsal that begins at 8:00 p.m. We will be posting our Holiday rehearsal schedule shortly and hope to have a preliminary 2017 Schedule posted online by mid December.

Congratulations Robbie!: The Band wishes to extend congratulations to TAPB piper Robbie Beaton on his fine 2nd place finish in the Nicol-Brown contest held on October 9th in Troy, NY. By all accounts this was an extemely close contest by a slate of incredibly talented pipers who were invited to this prestigious indoor event.

 

TAPB takes 2nd place at Capital District Scottish Games

Tulach Árd Pipe Band competed at the Capital District Scottish Games in Altamont, NY on Saturday, August 4. The Band took the 2nd place prize out of 5 bands in the Grade 2 Medley event. Congratulations to all TAPB soloists who competed and kudos to Colum Lundt (winner of both Professional Snare drumming events).

 

TAPB competes at Maxville & Montreal

TAPB Drum Corps wins overall at North American Championships/ Band takes 3rd prize at Montreal

Tulach Árd Pipe Band competed at the rain-drenched North American Pipe Band Championships at Maxville, Ontario on Saturday, July 31. In a field of 11 grade 2 bands (must compete in both MSR and Medley) the TAPB Drum Corps retained the title of North American Drum Corps Champions (overall results) and the Band played well in a tight contest. Other results of note: snare drummer Alex Robertson won for Amateur Drummer of the Day (grade 1) and Brian Morgan won for Best Bass drummer (professional). The Band went on to the sunny Montreal games on Sunday, August 1 and took 3rd place in a field of 6 bands (Medley event). The Band now prepares for our next contest at the Capital District Scottish Games.

 

TAPB opens contest season at Glasgowlands

TAPB up to the line at Glasgow LandsTulach Árd Pipe Band opened this very late competition season at the Glasgow Lands Scottish Festival, held on Saturday, July 17th in Northampton, MA. The Games saw a record 34 bands entered in four grades. Four bands competed in the Grade 2 March, Strathspey & Reel contest with TAPB taking 2nd place. The Band now prepares for the North American Pipe Band Championships, to be held in Maxville, Ontario on July 31.

 

TAPB Drum Corps wins Martin Duffy Memorial Drumming Challenge

Tulach Árd Pipe Band's drum corps competed at the first annual Martin Duffy Memorial Drumming Challenge on Saturday, June 19. In a small but significant contest, TAPB's drum corps won the Open Drum Corps medley event, with City of Washington's drum corps in 2nd place. The Band then took center stage for a 30 minute concert, under the direction of Piping Instructor Jake Watson. We now prepare for our first contest of the season (Glasgowlands) on July 17.

 

Band to perform at Martin Duffy Memorial Drumming Challenge

Tulach Árd Pipe Band will perform in concert at the Martin Duffy Memorial Drumming Challenge, to be held in Ridgefield, NJ on Saturday, June 19th. TAPB drum corps and drummers will also be competing at this first annual event that features solo drumming and drum corps contests. Additional details (when we will be playing, directions, etc.) will be posted shortly.

Our second annual St. Patrick's Day Concert was a great success and marked the Band's first public performance under the direction of Jake Watson. A receptive audience cheered for our Drum Corps world-class drum salute, the Boston premier for Calder Highland Dancers and a blistering smallpipe solo by Jake Watson. The evening was well rounded out by exciting Irish step dancing provided by members of the O'Shea/Chaplin School and traditional Irish music played by Tommy Peoples, Peter Maguire and Fabian Joyce.

Welcome Aboard: We welcome Don Ritchie to the TAPB pipe corps. Donald Ritchie was taught in and played with Manchester Pipe Band for many years and was Pipe Sgt. under PM Chuck Murdoch. Don also played with Worcester Kiltie Pipe Band in the grade one years and beyond under PM James Kerr. Don became PM of WKPB in 1988/89 season. Don is a respected and accomplished Open player with a combined thirty-six years of pipe band experience.

We are pleased to announce an impressive line-up of entertainment for our annual St. Patrick's Day Concert, to be held on Saturday, March 6th in Watertown, MA. The concert will feature a fantastic Irish music trio, which includes Fabian Joyce on guitar, Peter Maguire on flute and Bothy Band alumnus Tommy Peoples on fiddle. Members of the O'Shea/Chaplin School of Irish Step Dancing and Calder Highland Dancers will perform, along with Tulach Árd Pipe Band, under the direction of Jake Watson. TAPB and HDBTulach Árd Pipe Band presented our third annual Robert Burns Supper on Saturday, February 7th to rave reviews and an appreciative audience. The Band was joined by Celtic folk group Iona, as well as Highland Dance Boston. We also celebrated Matt Hamilton's 80th birthday. Matt is a World Champion Tenor Drummer and has been playing with pipe bands for over 50 years.

Congratulations: While the Band was performing in Newton our own Robbie Beaton competed in the Robert Gilchrist Memorial Piobaireachd Challenge in Malvern, PA. This is a prestigious indoor event, confined to pipers under age 22. Robbie Beaton took 3rd prize in a hotly contested event.

2016 Season Schedule posted/ Band welcomes new members

The Band's preliminary schedule for 2016 has now been posted online. See details below on our next weekend with Jake Watson.

Welcome aboard: We are pleased to welcome the following pipers for the 2016 season: Evan Ackerman, Robbie Beaton, J.R. Strauss and John Wassman.

Evan Ackerman: formerly with the Sir James McDonald Pipe Band or Portland, Oregan, Evan is currently pursuing his undergraduate studies in Maine.

Robbie Beaton: formerly with Oran Mor PB and 2003 EUSPBA Grade 2 solo piping champion, Robbie was recently promoted to Grade 1.

J.R. Strauss: formerly with the grade 1 Bucksburn & District Pipe Band of Aberdeen, Scotland, J.R. was a well-known EUSPBA soloist in the 1990s.

John Wassman: formerly the Pipe Major of Monaghan PB, John is a distinguished professional piper and an EUSPBA adjudicator.
